Franz Schubert: The Summer Journey.

Contributors:

Maria Fedotova (flute)
Cordula Hacke (piano)
Michael Dangl (recitation)

One week before his death, Franz Schubert wrote to his friend:

"Be so good as to help me by reading. I have read Cooper: The Last of the Mohicans, The Spy, The Pilot and The Settlers. If you have anything else by him, I implore you to leave it with Mrs. v. Bogner in the coffee house."

This special program juxtaposes Schubert's letters and diaries, in particular his descriptions of the journey to Salzburg and Gastein, with passages from novels by James Fenimore Cooper for the first time. It traces the Austrian composer's tragicomic longing for the vastness, sublimity and humanity of the American writer's adventure novels.

Music:

Franz Schubert
Hans Zender
Katherine Hoover
and other composers
